Thursday, September 16, 2021 5:00pm
Location: The Morgan Building - Main Gallery
The MD-EBD/MEBD Program Presents: Dr. Rahman Azari
Dr. Rahman Azari is an associate professor of architecture, affiliate associate professor of architectural engineering, the founding director of the Resource and Energy Efficiency [RE2] Lab, and the co-funded faculty member at the Institutes of Energy and the Environment at the Pennsylvania State University. Prior to Penn State, Azari taught at Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Texas-San Antonio.
Azari’s research focuses on building decarbonization through the assessment of life cycle environmental impacts of buildings and the development of innovative building materials for energy production and carbon absorption. Azari is a recipient of the American Institute of Architects’ Upjohn Research Grant in 2018 and 2019. Azari has also co-sponsored winning entries to ACSA+AIA COTE Top Ten competitions in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, Azari co-edited the Energy and Buildings’ Special Issue on Embodied Energy and Carbon Efficiency. Azari’s research has been published in journals such as Energy and Buildings, Building and Environment, and the Journal of Building Engineering. With a background in Architecture, Azari holds a Ph.D. in Built Environment from the University of Washington in Seattle.
"Buildings, along with transportation, are the key contributors to global warming. The building decarbonization efforts in the past few decades have focused on mitigation of operational carbon, and more recently, embodied carbon. This presentation highlights the challenges, knowledge gaps, and opportunities in research on building decarbonization and presents the recent innovations in carbon removal technologies to complement carbon mitigation practices."
