About this course...

Students will learn to develop, plan, and conduct experiments while crafting the necessary tools, both physical and digital, and to write research papers based on these experiments. The research proposal developed during the course will serve as a basis for hands-on exercises in the lab sessions.

  1. Introduction to research methods including literature review and synthesis
  2. Introduction to experimental methods, including techniques of monitoring, modeling, data representation, and analysis of environmental conditions
  3. Development and preliminary testing of a research hypothesis, using relevant methods of modeling and prototyping
  4. Maintenance of a comprehensive lab notebook
  5. Development of a 3,000-word draft of a conference paper on the preliminary research from the course
  6. Development of a research proposal for experimental work to be completed in Spring Semester, including research questions, methods, schedule, materials, and budget
