Double-skin System to Combat Air Pollution

Facade Section Concept

Existing double skin façade envelope is a passive, indoor air conditioning, system composed with two glazing layers; reflected by the sunlight, which heats the cavity air. According to the research by Gratia in 2007, cavity air can be over 10-30°C higher than the outdoor air temperature. Therefore, existing systems use that greenhouse cavity as a heating source and buffer for the indoor space in winter and avoid the greenhouse effect (primarily by ventilation) in summer.

Since the cavity zone is stable and controllable, it can work with heating and cooling while constantly allowing fresh air to flow through. Design features include;

  • Moveable cavity roof board for controllable greenhouse effect in the Summer and Winter Seasons.
  • Designing airflow to reduce aerosol deposit in occupant space in the Winter season.
